Every year during the LOWISA sailing race on Lake of the Woods, I head out in my tin boat with a camera, hoping to catch the perfect moment. But wind, sails, boats, and water don’t wait or pose. They move wherever they want. At some point, I stopped chasing the composition and decided to create it instead.
In this painting, I placed the boats where they needed to be. I changed the sails to white. I softened the water and let the scene breathe. The result is airy and light — less about competition and more about rhythm. The sails lean into the wind, reflections shimmer below, and the horizon holds everything in balance. It’s inspired by a real race, but shaped by memory and intention — a reminder that sometimes the artist decides where the wind blows.
