Pink often shows up layered into the oranges and apricots of sunsets in this area, like ribbons of colour across the same nocturnal canvas. But every now and then, it stops being a supporting act. For a brief moment the pink comes into its own, takes centre stage, and everything feels a little more cinematic.
This piece captures that exact moment — the romantic flare in the sky before dusk deepens and the night takes over.
This work is part of my Sunset Series. Painted in response to the ever-changing skies over Lake of the Woods, this vertical series celebrates the nightly theatre of light we see from our west-facing cottage. Working in acrylic on cradled wood panels with mixed media embellishments, I’ve abstracted silhouetted shoreline trees against shifting skies of chartreuse, orange, pink, and gold. Each panel holds a different mood — not a literal sunset, but the energy of one. And every so often, even the Northern Lights join the performance. Slender and luminous, these pieces stand like visual exclamation marks.
