There are places you return to not because they change, but because you do. This small island along the back channel of Lake of the Woods is one I’ve painted many times — in abstract blues and purples, in bright summer realism, and now here, as the sun lowers and the day begins to soften.

Lake of the Woods is known for its extraordinary skies. In the summer months they shift through a kaleidoscope of colour that feels almost unreal. On this evening, the island was bathed in warm orange and yellow, the kind of light that lingers just long enough to make you pause. For me, it has become more than a landscape. It’s a marker of memory.
