Japanese culture has always been a favourite of mine. There’s something about the precision — the geometry, the balance — that feels deeply satisfying. The radial lines of these parasols, paired with delicate blossoms drifting across their surfaces, are almost the perfect metaphor: structure and softness living together.
Here, the reds shift from fiery orange to deep crimson, layered against a dark, almost velvety background. Where some of my other umbrella paintings use red as punctuation, this one lets red take centre stage. It’s bold, intimate, and celebratory. And honestly, I’ve never been happier than when I was painting a piece that was almost entirely red.
